The Hot Rod Engine (USA)

Post by SpiritOfSelkirk »

One remarkable American built racing engine from the 1950s that went forward into the future was the Hot Rod tm. engine. It was manufactured as the "Swanson Hot Rod" as the "American Hot Rod' and finally at its last place of Manufacture at Elk River, Minnesota USA as the 'Hot Rod" engine. What was so unique about the engine was that it was all of 50 ponds in weight as a 15 cubic inch class A stock and the same weight for a class B stock racing engines. Another unique feature is its crankshaft rotary inlet valve that really brought about its performance on pump gasoline fuel though the engine remained a deflector pistoned engine. Speeds for class A stock Hot Rods were into the 50+ mile per hour ranges and some 60+ mph for the class Bs. As Gas Modifieds with open pipes and later some with expansion chambered exhausts systems speeds for class A Modifieds reached into the higher 65+mph with the class Bs getting into the low 70+mph ranges. Enjoy some pictures.
