As some will know I managed to bag myself a control master throttle and gear lever at Beaulieu on Sunday. I also have the ends to connect on to my engine (thanks Nick) but need a bit of help with what else to get and where from.
I think I've found the right type of cables I need here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Throttle-or-S ... 4d0b7ef136 but wandered if anyone knows of a good uk source I could get some from?
The only other parts I think I need are the racks for inside as I've opened it up and this is all the parts I have (see below).
So again if anyone knows where I might find some or even what they are 'technically called' so I can search for them more easily it would be much apreciated. I'm going to message akaroa123 (ebay) to see if he has anything but other than that I'm pretty stumped with that one.
Cheers
Dan

Re: Sourcing my throttle bits
Hi Dan, this guy has only short cables, but worthwhile asking. They are OMC type 'O', so ask Mike Vincent at South Coast Marine, or Fairweather Marine, or Chas Newens in Putney, or try Aquafax or anyone who supplies Ultraflex C4 cables (pre '79) - they're the same thing, open at both ends. If you have no luck then try outboard dealers or boat dealers who might have been long established...there's one in Falmouth we use ...might have some redundant stock..http://www.robincurnow.co.uk/and

The other bits are 2 white plastic racks that match the rachets on the levers, they should have a grub screw on each to crimp the cable end.

Re: Sourcing my throttle bits
I've done a bit of improvising with the throttle racks, as it looks like they might be quite hard to get hold of I thought in the mean time I'd have a go at making some
This is the piece of nylon I started off with, bought it online for £10 and as its probably enough to make about 10 of these so it will work out pretty cheap IF it works.
I set about cutting a block to the right size (carefully as I've found out just how easily nylon melts when you cut it) and putting a groove in the back of it so it follows the channel in the case casting.
Next I "roughly" drew around the teeth on the throttle lever moving the nylon block along as I went to try to keep them inline.
Then finally cut out the teeth. I tried doing this initially with the Fein saw but soon gave up when things started melting so I ended up using the chop saw with the head set to an angle of 7.5 degrees which is roughly the angle of the side of the tooth. I set the depth stop so it was about the right height and cut each tooth, two passes from each side to get the V shape of the tooth.
Thats how it came out after a bit of adjusting making each tooth equal etc there is still a bit of tidying up to do with a file but it's almost there. It seems very strong and slides well with the lever so fingers crossed, the only thing left to do is drill a hole down the center to accept the cable but until I've got hold of one I'm unsure of size and location so I'll leave it for now.

Very tidy, nylon is horrible to work with so full marks for ingenuity, effort and quality.

Am with floater on the work you've done. I have a spare for dimensions; somewhere - will do a hunt..

Re: Sourcing my throttle bits
The thread on the end of a 5c cable is 10-32UNF but if you don't have that size tap you can get away with M5 x 0.8 which is so close as not to matter in most applications.

Re: Sourcing my throttle bits
Cheers guys, yeah nylon is a pig to work with! I hadn't used it before but it seems to be hard to cut with a hacksaw and most electric tools just melt it, I've got a scroll saw that I was planning to use but it just made a gooey mess and hardly cut it at all. I guess the originals of these were probably injection moulded?!
Rapier: if you've got a spare it would be handy to get some pics of it if possible, particularly the grub screw/cable hole areas. These are the bits that I'm still unsure of

Re: Sourcing my throttle bits
I hadn't noticed this comment, I must have been writing mine at the time. I'm pretty sure from what rapier has said I need the type 'O' cables which are open both ends so I'm presuming I need a hole right through with a grub screw at the far end to pinch it or similar?floater wrote:The thread on the end of a 5c cable is 10-32UNF but if you don't have that size tap you can get away with M5 x 0.8 which is so close as not to matter in most applications.
Although I suppose as I'm making this bit myself does this mean I could use a different type of cable instead and change the end? Since the type 'O' cables are also quite hard to source now.
