The smaller Mercury 44 cubic inch engines were not to be counted out either. In the USA and Canada these engines with the same basic block casting from 30 to 40 and 44 cubic inch for class C,D,E and FE Modified are very much part of the North American racing scene in both hydro and runabout classes with the Modified 44 cubic inch Mercs tangling in races against the 20 cubic inch larger Mark 75s at 60 cubic inches. The Merc 44s proved to be high accellerating engines for short and medium courses where the Mark 75s tangling with them could find dominence on the large closed courses dur to a higher attainable top end. They had a unique sound be they 4 or 6 cylinder engines very unique to Mercurys. Enjoy the pictures.

Featuring a cluster of Mercury Modified Racing 4 and 6 cylinder engines courtesy of Charlie Williams at http://www.outboardracing.com . Can one imagine the racket all these running at once would case with both 60 and 90 degree firing orders all running at once on open pipes! Enjoy the picture.
