Flexible couplings are there to help with vibration, the shafts still need to be aligned correctly or you will get increased vibration resulting in coupling failure. I would do as Sean Nos has done & fit a flange to the shaft & align it correctly. Your stuffing box would be mounted on a hose as it is on an Albatross or a Delta.
Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!
