Padstow tragedy
If you have a boat with a hand throttle & it is possible to get thrown out - WEAR YOUR KILL CORD.

Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!

The Coastguard hands these out to kids at Beavers here; nice to know the message is being pushed early.

Would it be a good idea to get some of these made up with the CMBA logo to show our support?

Simmonds fitted from new with what, I believe, is the only running factory marinised Daimler 2.5 litre V8 (as fitted to the Daimler SP 250) in the UK. Please let me know if you find another! Believed to be Norman Buckley's race boat.

Yes - I agree Simon, we will look into it.
See here for the official MAIB report. Could have happened to any one of us.
It is a shame that wireless kill cords are not available at a reasonable price. The Coastkey system, one of only two I found in a 10 min Google search, seems to be the one to have - but at £458.00 + vat it is far from cheap. These devices are much more likely to be used, most of us have had our KC attached then had to take it off to move around the boat for some reason & forgotten to put it back on.
There but for the grace of god etc. etc.

Re: People need to learn from this tragedy
Interesting to read the Coroner talking about a review of boat training and the words compulsory being used, along with how powerful boats are now, vs the past. I think the MAIB report said both drivers had PBL 2 qualifications and read somewhere else they had 200 hours on that RIB and both used the kill cord on all occasions, bar this one. Not sure how further legislation could have helped in these very sad circumstances, but point taken anyway. We've even seen the small outboard motored tenders out of control and pilot-less, so one wonders where you'd start.
