This enthusiast for things wooden was busy during the first lockdown with a runabout build.
My blog includes pages with images and progress reports on the road to completion in August 2020. (link below here)

Unsure if my quirky creation qualifies as a classic. At present its varnish is being touched up and a small modification to the outboard well has been made. Being too shallow, the well fouled the carry handle when the outboard was only half raised.

Hi Graham

Welcome to the CMBA! A lovely looking boat you have there.

It has an interesting large reversed chine, what design is the boat?

Hi Water-buoy,
I pencilled the design out on a couple of A4 sheets after pondering over various other designs. Its an attempt at capturing the old style runabout above the waterline and the present day RIB below. An 1/8th scale half model was carved solid so I could take measurements for the mould stations and profiles. The sloping foward bulkhead is after the style of the Albatross ski-boat, but I also wanted an outboard engine.
I have buoyancy chambers using a raised floor plus the rear chamber, as well as the front chamber, so it should remain afloat even if holed.
There was quite a lot of fairing off of the moulds before the lines looked right. In taking off 1/8 scale sizes of course the slight discrepancies were magnified eight times over. The amount of rocker used is greater than the old-timers - they are often flat as a pancake. However the handling on the water has proved fine without too much slamming in choppy water. Pick-up onto the plane is gradual and there is no sence of squatting as the power is applied. I dare say she could handle more power but 20 hp gives a lively ride.
I enjoy playing around with wood projects of all sorts. The steering wheel for instance, was like the one made for my Morgan 4/4 but more rigid, with additional spokes; they are of bamboo but plenty strong enough. The tennis racquet style seats are light but removable, they are simply attached by the use of nylon cable ties - you might call it a bodge job but it works well enough !
Kind Regards,
Graham.
P.S. Half model is where it all began, but this doesn't show the underside spray rails or final shape of the outboard well. Much of the work was adjusted "on the fly" - only solved by late night doodlings.

Puttings wrongs to right has obliged me to strip back the varnish on the sides due to one small mistake !!! I used Liberon sanding sealer between the gunnels and chine while she was still upside down, in the belief that it would speed up the job of varnishing. Fortunately I chose not to do the same on the decks, once right side up. Only on getting afloat, and after a few very minor scratches to the sides, I discovered that the glossy varnish (Epiphanes) had failed to properly adhere to the wood. On checking the Luberon sealer the reason was simple. It contains wax which is NOT recommended for anything other than a further wax polish. The only remedy was to scrape, peel, scrub and sand back to bare wood. A further scrub with Acetone and then apply the correct Epoxy seal coat. Four more coats of Clear Epoxy have been slow to cure in the cold. The garage was heated later to hurry things up. I am presently sanding down with wet & dry in readiness for applying a further couple of coats of Epiphanes UV filter, in order to protect the Epoxy and get a more durable finish.

Wow that's a gutting blow. Looked like a cracking finish in the pictures, to then have to do it over again is painful

All's well with the varnishing now. Improvements have been made to the sealing gasket of the hatch cover, and clearance for accomodating the outboard carry handle. My trailer has been given an overhaul too. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing one of the inspirational craft that led me to want to build something similar. It's this super little, record breaking craft, found in the Auckland Maritime Museum, New Zealand a few years ago. Link Here: https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipO ... gReNUGiv_L

Fished out of Teignmouth today but very liitle to show for it. My brother and me only managed a baby Gurnard and an undersized Bass between us but the weather was the warmest of the year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=413eGBESOYQ
