Fairey Duckling

Post by Rapier »

My recent buy arrived home today - am hoping likely against odds that the sun and wind will come out and allow it to dry out enough for a proper evaluation -the previous owner stripped it, but left it in the open and prior to that it seems largely uncared for. At this stage it looks like some work...and is named 'Pud' for the time being.

This one is the non raggie version, so my '62 Johnson 3hp, or the similar vintage Seagull 40+, or aircooled 70s Achimedes 39 will suffice....The Merc 3.9 is just too heavy and a long shaft.

Hoping to be at Cardiff in the Pearly Miss and looking forward to seeing you two; been a few years!

Spent yesterday scraping paint and varnish off the Fairey. It's a bit challenged and has obviously had an extremely hard life, having been dropped at some point, developed some rot around the corners of transom and has a number of splits and delaminations in the hull, the worst of which is the stem. There is much evidence of previous repairs long before the advent of fibreglass and modern sticky stuff. I think is worth the effort, at least that's what I keep convincing myself and had the boost of a former Fairey worker popping in for coffee, proffering advice and proving willing to a bit of poking around it with a trowel.

Don't know if you are aware of the Uffa Fox site - they have plans available here:

Bizarrely enough I have a chum who was after one of these and considered building his own - each to their own... :?
