Latest arrival - Simmonds

Post by solitaire »

I've been out of action for a while but something for me to tinker with arrived in Dorset from "Up North" today.
A 1956 Early Teddington built Simmonds. No numbers but the narrow engine hatch and aft ski towing ring lead us to beleive its an early boat
On the whole - its nice and tidy, but needs fettling, had a nice engine upgrade to 1600 crossflow which I am told has a few tweeks?
Unfortunately, due to leaks, the skin tank has been bypassed and converted to raw water cooling, so -a plate heat exchanger and oil cooler upgrade are already on the list, plus a fuel/water separator and battery kill switch, just the basic stuff - I don't intend turning into a checker plate special with underwater lights - just a case of "less is more"!
Will try to keep the post updated as I progress.

I,m pretty sure the "Log" exhaust cancels out any engine performance mod's to the crossflow

Looks really super! I am in Dorset and have a Simmonds but it was missing the rudder when I purchased it. Any chance I could measure yours up so I can fabricate a new one?

Picture of prop and rusty rudder, should the rudder be alloy or stainless? - The distance between the cutless bearing and prop is 3" - (seems excessive!) I have been installing and building bigger boats with shafts for years and normal distance is about 15-25mm to reduce any run out - 3" seems alot for a prop spinning at >5K rpm, but this may be the norm on a Simmonds - any thoughts???

I agree, the gap is too big. I will post a picture of mine upside down tomorrow. The gap is nominal. I would suggest that the shaft has moved rearward when they swapped the engine?

Already on it  easier to reduce shaft length than add! Looks like the crossflow bell housing is deeper than the old Consul one the normal gap will allow some thrust on the flex mounts and room for a prop puller. I will re-profile the rudder to make it better balanced and less like a paddle. Have found lots to do, and will remove the engine for a blueprint rebuild with "hopefully" another 10hp. A high torque 90hp would be nice. Improved crankcase ventilation,
Boat safety standard fuel system with valve and water trap
Battery master switch
Plate type exchanger with closed water cooling circuit
Improved throttle
Auto bilge pump
Bilge blower
Cockpit trim
Smiths tacho to replace speedo
All on the to do list.... :hmmm:
