Merc 300 no spark

One of those annoying episodes - form a motor running perfectly 3 weeks ago to zilch. Only got a very weak spark on HT lead #1, nothing on the others. Had the distributor off yesterday, gapped and cleaned the points again, got a belt off the dynamo (!) checked the timing, put it all back together an...

Re: 1966 Merc 350 (35hp) Electric Start Flywheel

Hi solitaire, I've got one you are very welcome to but it's got one tooth missing - don't suppose that's a problem, plus a box of assorted odds and sods from a dismantled 350 electric.

drop me an email.

cheers

John Merryfield

Hi, anyone have contact details or know the whereabouts of John Merryfield? He was a partner with Len Melly and had MM Boats - they built the Levi 16 that Len used to win the Paris 6 hour race in 1964 (I think).

Re: Ford crossflow engine

Hi Dan, check whether or not the box has been run in salt water. Marine gearbox cooling is usually direct from the water intake before it goes around the engine. If it has been run in salt, chances are the inside of the box is corroded. Looking at your photos it appears to have corrosion around the ...

Re: SELVA outboards info wanted

Hi Charles, Thunderbolt III is my 1956 3 point hydro. Bought this motor on spec off fleabay. As far as I have discovered there was a T550 monohull class on the continent that we didn't have over here (we have a T850 class) so it's possible this is where the motor came from. It is a hybrid of the 'co...

Re: SELVA outboards info wanted

Bit disappointing at Ivy lake. made loads of noise and smoke and ran a treat in neutral but wouldn't start in gear, so couldn't go anywhere. Several theories put forward: - prop too big - 3 blade 10 3/4" x 17 1/2" surface piercing job. Anyone got anything smaller, it's a 14 spline, so obviously none...

SELVA 495 racing

Well, Rapier and I actually got the Selva fired up on Saturday! Revs ran away a bit so the carbs need cleaning out, however plonked it on the back of Thunderbolt III, looks the part! Managed to rig the fly-off throttle ok, worked out the wiring, there's no charging circuit so will just run off a bat...

Re: SELVA outboards info wanted

Harsh, very harsh! Clive, what do you reckon on the compression - is that unusually high or about right for a racing motor?

Re: SELVA outboards info wanted

For those who are desperate to hear more, I'm making some progress: a date stamp on the starter motor (april '91) supports the view it is an early/mid 90's motor. We emailed the factory for information today (in Italian!) in the hope it may generate response, and I've also ordered a parts manual CD ...
