Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s
Thanks for this helpful report. I've got 3 of these gearboxes, which will probably all need attention at some stage. Your insights will be useful. I wonder what you did with that "welded in" bolt?

Re: 1964 Johnson 40hp RD-26S
Hi I wonder how your '64 40hp is going? I'm doing some servicing on my original 40hp, and as usual the simple little job is experiencing 'mission creep'. I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the exhaust port cover off and see what nasties are lurking in there. The first time I tried thi...

Re: 1964 Johnson 40hp RD-26S
A couple of pictures of 2 of the Evinrude 6hp cylinder heads. Checking with a straight edge showed that both were warped, and the top one, quite badly eroded. The picture of the two heads, was after some intial preparation with 120 & 180 grit, taped to a sheet of plate glass. It reveals the warping ...

Re: 1964 Johnson 40hp RD-26S
Hi Rapier I was wrong about the spare Johnson 40hp engine I've bought. I'm not sure why I bought it? I suppose I just couldn't pass it by. Actually, it's not a '65 model. The serial plate is gone, but it's probably a '62 RD-24 or '63 RD-25 - so exactly the same as my original engine - but without an...

Re: Healey 55 outboard
Hi Steve Any news on your Healey 55 outboard boat? I presume it is the very rare boat - red, with Merc 6-cylinder, previously used at Wells-next-the- Sea ski club? The few pictures I've seen look really interesting. I have a couple of '62 Johnson V4 outboards waiting to be restored and am wondering ...

Re: 1964 Johnson 40hp RD-26S
And 1 more thing to add to the shopping list for the Mercury 150hp - an oil injection warning fault. I'm not sure whether this is real a problem - like a seized injection pump and sheared drive gear - or a problem with the system that monitors the things that do the work - like a sensor or the warni...

Re: 1964 Johnson 40hp RD-26S
Ah - the joys of boating! I was so impressed with your work on the '64 Johnson, that when I saw a '65, I decided it needed a good home, and I needed a spare engine. Surprisingly our little day out with the '62 engine at Abingdon in August was pleasantly trouble-free - but I'm not confident about tak...

Re: Ski Twin 33
Any tips on fitting new piston rings to these older OMC engines? I've been practicing on a little 6hp, before moving onto anything more valuable. Aligning the piston rings to the little lugs in the pistons seems quite fiddly. Very easy for the rings to slip past the lugs, causing the rings to bulge....
