Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

Hi. Thanks for advice on 2-stroke oil and the carburettor repair kit part number. I asked Bob at South Coast about kits - so hopefully the part number will help. I used to be the proud owner of one 1960s Johnson, but things have got a bit out of hand since then. Chris Tate has a lot to answer for......

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

Here it is running with the new carburettor cork float https://youtu.be/B1RFwbUe8ao I'm much happier with this now. The plugs look much cleaner too. Yes, I definitely need to change back to normal marine 2-stroke oil, because the stuff I got from Halfords stays black, and does not seem to break down...

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

Many thanks for your suggestions. It didn't look so bad in that video, but it got worse - eventually stopping. I presume the plugs were too fouled up to continue. I've wondered about my oil calculations, but every way I do them I come up with same answer - 4% - so 25:1. This early '60s model was sup...

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

Here's my latest barrel test. I'm hoping the new cork float will sort this out. Seems to be running much too rich, too smokey, and using too much fuel. Originally I thought the cork washer was the culprit, by-passing the brass fixed jet at the base of the high speed tube. But I've got a stock of the...

A few pictures of the cleaned up parts for the '62 Johnson, including the re-made thermo switch.

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

A few pictures of my oily '62.
On the picture of the floats - the top one is about 60 years old and the bottom one is NOS. It's not obvious to me what is wrong with the old cork, but perhaps it's just absorbing petrol & ethanol and sinking?

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

Hi Guys Thanks for advice about greases. I'll stop using copper ease. I managed to drill out my broken bolts, but it was a slow and painful process. At the moment I'm working on a couple of Big Twins - a '62 Johnson 40hp, we've owned from new and a bargain project '67 Evinrude. When I opened the cra...

Re: OMC 40hp Gearboxes - late 1960s

I was interested in the broken stud, because it's such a perennial problem! I've been taking the exhaust cover, exhaust pipe and cylinder head water jacket off my 40hp and have broken at least 7 bolts in the process. I got fed-up with my little butane torch and invested in a MAPP torch, which does a...

Over-heat switch Johnson 40

Hello All In the distant past, the over-heat warning light on my 1962 Johnson 40 RDS-24 had a tendency to come on, causing great alarm. After throttling back, it normally went off. For this season's service, I've decided to investigate further and have got the part out of the cylinder head. Unsurpri...
