Mine is midships through the side high up, it has a complete loop in the hose under the cockpit coaming just before it connects on the vent. If any water entered the vent it wouldn't end up in the tank, just have to check there's no water in the loop now and again.

I assume as with our "big" boat if you fit any tube to a skin fitting it is best raised right up as high as possible and down again to protect from water coming in or even a syphon being created....swan neck I believe?
