Looks like it could be a rectifier to me.

Looks like a rectifier to me, the right wiring for one although it doesn't look original to me I could be wrong though. There are a lot of pattern ones available that are perfectly good. I haven't ever seen one like this before myself. Remember what I said at Chichester though Rob, you don't need charging on your engine to keep it running - it has a magneto - so the battery is only to start the motor or power up any electrics on the boat.

Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!

Rectifier methinks.Though I couldn't guess what from.Yamaha mariner????It looks Japanese. Two yellow for the stator/alternator.Gray for the tach/rev counter, red +,all to the power pack.Is there a part number on it? Do you know what Mercury it came off?
no matter how bad it is,it can always get worse,I'm an optimist

Saw one of these advertised as mid 80s on Chrysler Force Mercury in the states.

Unless you are a stickler for originality and rectifier from later model Mercs will do, you just have to connect the wires to suit.
