I would try and put the nut back on hold the worm in a vice with the shoulders of the housing against the sides of the vice . Then get the cone really hot I like map gas, then get a lump of hard wood and a club hammer and hit the nut end of the shaft and the cone should realise and the hole shaft should slide out.

Be very carful when heating the alloy, too much heat will change its structure of the alloy. Before using a flame try a hot air gun. It is not a good idea to use a hammer on the unit as this will compress the alloy and damage the assembly best to use a puller with steady pressure. You could try heating it with hot air and then cooling it quickly a few times the thermal shock somtimes works.

Someone's already damaged the thread on mine where the nut holds the steering wheel on so I'm not going to try to dismantle it any further unless I have to. As the American expression you were looking for says, Sham:- "If it ain't bust - don't fix it!"

If I do have to dismantle it, I would take careful measurements from a suitable datum and then clamp the shaft below the worm and try to drift the flange off towards the steering wheel end. The flange may move or the bearing may move, hence the need for measurements but at least it would reverse the way Albatross must have pressed it on. As there's no taper, I can't imagine it being much more than a minor interference fit.

Hi it was not pressed on and should just fall off . If you uniformly heat the hole unit around the cone it will all be fine , all that has happened is that it has corroded together . Please note i said use hard wood on the end of the shaft and hit that not the shaft . All of you rebuilding an Albatross need to rush out and buy a tube of .Duralac

Other wise you could lock the housing in a vise and press the shaft through it !
