I have been asked my advice on fitting controls to the following, i must admit i am not familier with Evinrude's so ask for your help:-
The outboard is an Evinrude 6804B from 1978.
The task is to connect a set of old remote controls to the old outboard.
The steering wheel has a drum behind it with a multi slotted/threaded surface.
The Morse style control has a two cable outlet. It appears to be functioning – initial motion in either direction moves one cable ( gears – we assume) – further motion moves the second cable (throttle – we assume).
Now we come to the bit(s) where you can help.
STEERING
We think we have this figured. The (home made) bracket supplied fits the Evinrude handle, and instead of a Evinrude quick release fitting we will have an M8 bolt.
Q – Are the number of turns around the steering wheel drum standard – if not – what do you suggest we start with.
THROTTLE
This is our toughest bit to understand. We have bought - via eBay - attachments for Evinrude engines to remotes. Our success is that these fit to the M5 thread on the Remotes cable ends.
Our half success is that the attachment for the Throttle fits the Bracket/Spigot on the outboard (by the gear wheels), but does not allow appropriate movement. In particular the lug on the clip of the throttle attachment fouls the bracket one way, and at full throttle the angle of the attachment to the bracket is extreme and it seems impossible that the cable could follow it out that far.
Q – any ideas?
Herewith a big question – if you put such an outboard onto remote controls – do you physically take away the manual Tiller/Throttle. Is so, how.
GEARS
Hope fully our simplest challenge. The gear lever has been cut short for some reason. Extending it to match the Morse control cable movement looks straightforward – if you see any problems please advise.
Clamp thread
It looks like we are provided with a position for an outer cable clamp (green arrow two photos above). D you know this thread form – in particular is it UNC /UNF. What shape clamp is used.
It looks like we are provided with a position for a outer cable clamp (yellow arrow), This looks tough – a blank hole in a thin sheet metal bracket. Is there a special fitting available. What shape clamp is used.
ENGINE
Although the Evinrude people were complimentary, the engine was rather smoky (white/grey) on its first run. We know it is a two stroke – is this normal.
The engine has two Mixture Controls – rich/lean for Fast – rich/lean for Slow.
Are these meant to be adjusted during a start-up/run, or once set to be left alone.
Any answers to the numerous questions would be much appreciated, there are photos but i have not been able to format them for the forum, i will work on that.
Regards
Oliver

Re: Evinrude steering and remote connection
Hi Oliver,
On engine steering bracket M8 is fine, lock the nut or use nylox.
Follow the steering diagram below. The steering cables need to come off the top of the spindle and I'd advise taping it with duct tape until it's all in-situ. Engine side you can gear it down or have direct..is a matter of personal preference.
Morse remotes are largely an unknown to me, but possibility is that the throw is different (there are kits for that too). Personally I'd buy a set of remotes that match the engine...
Remove the tiller arm, with it, there'll be more drag on box with the action of moving cables. OMCs of that era typically have a set screw that holds both the grip and the inner extension together, unscrew that and the engine side screws.
Both the high and low speed adjustments work on the jets, normally left alone, but if you want to tune, they need to be screwed home (very softly so as not to damage the needles) then backed out to OMC specs, which vary, is something like 3/4 and 1 & 1/2 as a start, ideally you need a test prop and a rev counter to maximise the tuning...anyone with a Clymer / Seloc manual for up to '78 might be able to help.

Re: Evinrude steering and remote connection
Oliver, you'll need the morse clip kit for those, one each side; they have a small screw provided and once installed (you'll have to modify the cut down shift lever) will hold the outer cable clear of the engine and enable the inner to do it's stuff. The proper evinrude versions are available too and look like opposed Cs. Petrolhead will have a pic of the morse ones if you ask. Those remotes typically look like early Suzuki / Yamaha, but are generic. You can still get the OMC style steering brackets which look like the pic below.
Get in touch with this okie, he'll probably have the morse versions in stock (and maybe the steering bracket..). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Johnson-Evinrude- ... 5637d121aa
Keep finding more to add..the oke in the link above breaks engines so he might have a shift lever sculling around. Here is what it's supposed to look like:-
