As I get the new engine fitted this week, I've been told it would be a good idea to try and source some parts to keep in reserve.
So if anyone has any of the following, please let me know!
1979 Mercury 140hp inline 6:
Engine loom socket (which fits on the side of the outboard)
CDI (there's 2 CDI's on this block - each one is from a 3 cylinder unit)
Stator Coil (I'm told it has to be from a 140hp unit, but I wonder if a 150hp donor would suffice given how they are the same engine physically?)

I think you will find that the 140hp and 150hp stators are different, your type of 140hp has under flywheel ignition, the 140/150 of the mid 70s has distributer ignition.
But the parts you list are still available, as a patten part, you shouldn't have any trouble getting them for some time yet, there are still thousands of them being used in the states, as long as they keep using them, the after market manufacturers will keep making the bits.
Anyway, if it goes wrong.......I'll give you a couple of hundred quid for it........

150 wouldn't work as the 150 has a distibutor & a different ign. system completely. The CDI units pop up on eBay quite often so keep looking there, for the loom again eBay but I dont recal seeing them. They are more common in the USA as the yanks had plenty of IL6's compared to us so check out eBay USA, the rate isn't too bad at the moment although I have seen better. Personally I wouldn't worry your pretty little head about any of this - certainly not the loom bit.
Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!

Thanks guys.
The main reason for the spare loom is due to a bit of damage to one of the pins at some point when the engine was removed.
We think we have it connected up fine for now.
"....pretty little head" ?
It's swelling by the day since I got the Merc!

Re: 1979 Mercury 140hp inline 6 parts wanted
Thanks Geoff, I was just looking through the parts lists on outboardparts.com .
I'm assuming it's the 1979 part #414-5532 I'd be after?
The engine is marked 140, not 1400 on the decals (I'm not sure exactly how I'd tell otherwise - the serial number didn't match the range for that year.
First round is on me in Cardiff this year for yourself and Clive.

This might be a bit of help for finding parts.

Nice one Sean-nos!
I was around to get the Hot Foot pedal positioned earlier today and agree placement of the throttle box.
Hope to have her back at the house on Friday evening. A trip this weekend might be possible, but it's highly unlikely I'll have the prop repaired by then (especially as it's still in the car!).
