The thin red stripes were used, but only in 1970 and 1971. Blue after that, and heavy red in 1968 and 1969. 1967 was silver with a hint of a red stripe, and silver before that.

Remove the wire on the side of the mag going to the harness and try again. If the spark comes back look for a bad key switch, harness, or mercury tilt switch, the little condenser looking part on the side of the engine that is wired into the mag. Unless you are a stickler for originality and rectifier from later model Mercs will do, you just have to connect the wires to suit.

You do not have to suffer the cable steering on your boat. Mine has the same wheel, and it uses the common taper on all modern push pull steering helms such as Teleflex or Morse so it will fit on the shaft no sweat. That wheel is called an Attwood Flying Crest by the way, about 1962 vintage.

If the problem persists you may have to pull the exhaust jacket off the side of the engine and inspect the exhaust jacket divider plate for cracks or corrosion, common in salt water use. The powerhead has to come off to get at all the bolts easily, but it is not a bad job, getting the cover off with...
